Greg Cockerill - Owner and Graphic Designer of Ash Creative
Ash Creative was created in 2014, from the 'ashes' of martini design. It's also the name we chose for our black Labrador at the time. Previous to this I spent 10 years in the advertising and design industry.
Before heading overseas I worked in a number of design firms before I took up a contract role at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, implementing exhibition graphics as well as the large array of way finding signage throughout the museum. In the UK, I found design work, including a stint working for an English adult magazine, named "Come Monthly" between various jaunts to Europe and the USA.
On returning home, with a little one on the way, I took up a position at Promotus Advertising (now named Hemisphere) then Communication Arts and finally a print company before the moonlighting became too much and it became a full time business.
Working with the likes of Samsung, Telecom, BCITO, Suzuki, Save the Children, Bayleys and a number of small business clients honed my skills and temperament.
My first film job came when I was asked to complete a sketch for the movie "The Irrefutable truth about Demons" staring Karl Urban. The funny thing is he used to serve me latte's at a well known Wellington cafe before he was famous! Eventually the pull to leave Wellington, and it's delightful weather behind, became too strong and I moved up to Auckland in 2019.
When I’m not busy working either remotely on a project or contracted to a film job, I try and find time to enjoy the amazing outdoor lifestyle Aotearoa, New Zealand has to offer.
Currently I'm walking the Te Araroa Trail, a 3000km walk from Cape Reimga to Rakiura (Stewart Island), I'm doing this in stages - basically because I miss my comfy bed.
